Let's say Ben = X and  Ishaan= Y.

Ben is 12 years older than Ishaan is equal to

[tex]X=12+Y[/tex]

Three years ago, Ben was 4 times as old as Ishaan.

[tex]X-3=4*Y[/tex]

Now, you have two incognitas and two equations, you can solve it.

[tex](12+Y)-3=4*Y\\12-3=4Y-Y\\9=3Y\\\frac{9}{3}=Y \\3=Y[/tex]

And now you can use this number to know Ben's age.

[tex]X=12+Y[/tex]\\[tex]X=12+3[/tex]\\[tex]X=15[/tex]
