The civil rights era of the 1950s and 1960s was a movement with the goal : to secure for African Americans equal access to and opportunities for the basic privileges and rights of U.S. citizenship. The movement included legal means, negotiations, petitions, and nonviolent protest demonstrations. This movement is sometimes called "second Reconstruction" because it realized the promises made to Black Americans after the Civil War.
