This is the time in which literature greatly differed from that of its predecessors. Writers started experimenting with various types of styles, and thus the technique of stream of consciousness was created. This technique was mostly used by James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and many others at the time. Modernism began in the late 19th century, and lasted throughout the first half of the 20th century.
