The animal's respiration rate increases significantly as its body temperature rises, and it cools as a result of water evaporating from its mouth, lungs, and (in birds) air sacs. Similar to other evaporative cooling methods (like perspiration), panting uses up a lot of water, which must be replenished for the animal to continue to regulate its body temperature.
