I know that luther opposed the catholic church because he thought that they were corrupt and abused their power, especially because of indulgences, which is payment to the government in order to get a "ticket" to heaven. And he thought it was not what God would want and that it is extremely bad to do that and I'm not sure what else you can read his 95 thesis if you want to.
