Colonel Robert E. Lee withdraws from the United States armed forces from the Union army when Virginia seceded
Lee opposed secession, but he was a faithful son of Virginia. His formal submission was only one order, but he signed a longer expression to his friend and teacher, General Winfield Scott. Colonel Robert had struggled under Scott during the Mexican War, and he unveiled to his former administration the extent of his conflict.
